Dark mode
Other models
Besides VRoid/VRM avatars and the official Genshin Impact models, you can use any VRM or MMD model you're allowed to use. Okaeri reads .vrm, .glb, .pmx and .pmd files, or a .zip or folder with the model and its textures.
Where to find models you may use
- Your own creations. VRoid Studio is free and easy; Blender with the VRM add-on gives you full control.
- VRoid Hub and BOOTH. Many creators share or sell anime avatars there. Each model shows its conditions (avatar use, commercial use, sharing).
- Official fan models from game studios. Besides Genshin Impact, HoYoverse publishes official MMD models for Honkai: Star Rail and Zenless Zone Zero with similar terms. Other studios sometimes do the same; read their terms.
- MMD artists. Many MMD creators share original characters on BowlRoll, DeviantArt, BOOTH or Niconico 3D. Their readme (often called 規約, "terms") says what's allowed. Personal use is usually fine; re-uploading usually isn't.
- Commissions. Artists (for example on VGen or BOOTH) make custom VRM avatars. Agree with them that you'll use it in a desktop app.
What makes a model work well
- VRM 0.x or 1.0, or MMD with the standard Japanese bone names.
- Face shapes for blinking, the mouth sounds (あいうえお) and a smile, so she can blink, talk and laugh. VRM models almost always have them, and most MMD models do.
- Under about 70,000 polygons, so she runs smoothly all day.
If an MMD model "doesn't use the standard bone names", it can't be animated. Try another release, or convert it to VRM (see the Genshin page).
Ripped models aren't supported
Some people extract ("rip" or datamine) models from games. Okaeri doesn't support those, and this guide won't explain how to get or convert them: ripping breaks the games' terms and the artists' rights, and ripped models usually lack the face shapes she needs to blink, smile and talk. If you love a character from a game, look for an official fan model like the ones above, or make your own original look in VRoid Studio.
Keep it for yourself
Imported models stay on your PC and are never uploaded. Don't share models you don't own, and respect each model's terms. The Steam Workshop takes only maps and routines, never models.
Adult (R-18) models and content aren't supported. See Romance.
