Talking

She only says a few built-in lines. No AI is connected yet. Connect a free account in ⚙️ Settings → AI; OpenRouter takes one click. See Free AI setup.

"Free AI didn't answer just now." The service was busy or today's free messages ran out. She switches to your other connected accounts by herself, so connecting a second free account (Cloudflare or Groq) helps most. Free messages come back the next day.

She doesn't hear me.

• Check ⚙️ Settings → Talking: Talk with your voice must be on (push-to-talk or listening for her name).
• Push-to-talk with Space needs her window to be active; click it first. Ctrl+Alt+Space works from anywhere.
• Windows may block the microphone: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone, turn on Let desktop apps access your microphone.
• Listening for her name downloads its speech model (about 80 MB) the first time; give it a moment.

I can't hear her. Check ⚙️ Settings → Voice (it may be set to Off) and your volume. The natural voice downloads once (about 90 MB) before she first speaks with it, so her very first spoken reply can take a moment.

She speaks English, but I wrote in another language. Her replies come back in your language, but her natural voice only speaks English. Choose a System voice in your language in Settings → Voice. See Other languages.

Desktop mode

How do I get her back to her home? Right-click her → 🏠 Visit her home, or use the Okaeri icon in the system tray next to the clock. See Back to her home.

Her home window disappeared when she went to the desktop. That's normal: she's in one place at a time. Bring her home and the window comes back.

There's a black box around her. Right-click the tray icon → Troubleshooting → Black box behind her? Use software rendering. The app restarts.

I can't find her. Right-click the tray icon → In her home (window), then send her to the desktop again. When you drag her between monitors, she always settles fully onto one screen.

My clicks don't reach the app behind her. Clicks only stop on her body. Drag her somewhere else, or make her smaller: right-click → Size.

Phone

White page, endless loading, or "This site can't be reached". See If your phone can't reach her. Usually it's the Windows firewall (one button fixes it) or a network set to Public.

VR

There's no Enter VR button. Start SteamVR or Quest Link first, set it as your OpenXR runtime, use Chrome or Edge, and reload the page. See In VR.

I only see a flat window in my headset. You're looking at your PC's desktop inside SteamVR. Point at the browser and press 🥽 Enter VR.

She doesn't hear me in VR. Allow the microphone for the VR page in the browser (the icon in the address bar), then hold A or X to talk.

She's small when I stand. Crouch with the right stick (down), or sit down.

Her look

"Doesn't use the standard bone names". The model isn't a standard MMD rig and can't be animated. Try another release, or convert it to VRM. See Genshin Impact characters.

White textures or garbled names after importing an MMD model. Import the original downloaded .zip instead of an extracted folder; Okaeri reads the Chinese file names inside correctly.

Her hair doesn't move on an MMD model. Hair and skirt physics for MMD models aren't simulated yet. VRM models (or MMD models converted to VRM) have swaying hair.

Performance

My fans get loud, or the laptop battery drains fast. Set ⚙️ Settings (Advanced) → World → Graphics to Low (battery saver). Companion mode also saves power. A model with fewer polygons helps too.

FAQ

Does Okaeri work offline? Partly. She lives her day, reacts to you and answers with built-in lines without internet, and her natural voice and on-PC speech recognition work offline after their first download. For real conversations offline, use a local AI like Ollama or LM Studio (Advanced mode).

Can I use my ChatGPT or Claude subscription? No. Chat subscriptions (ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro and so on) don't include access for other apps. For a specific provider, Advanced mode takes an API key with prepaid credits from that provider's developer website. Or stay with the free accounts.

Does she remember things across characters? No. Each character has her own memories, closeness and voice.

Is my data uploaded somewhere? No account is needed, and your memories, settings, models and songs stay on your PC. Messages go only to the AI service you connected. See Privacy and safety.

Mac or Linux? Okaeri is a Windows app for now.
